Support Group FAQs

WHAT IS OUT OF LINE?

Out of Line is a grassroots recovery organization for queer, trans, and Two-Spirit survivors of cults and high-demand groups, founded in October 2025 in New York City, New York. The organization is founded and run by two queer & trans cult survivors whose bios may be found on our About page. Currently, our primary offering is a two-hour support group held twice monthly on Zoom.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS SUPPORT GROUP. . .

DO I HAVE TO BE A QUEER/TRANS/TWO-SPIRIT SURVIVOR TO ATTEND?

Yes, this is a closed space for people of this identity. No media, researchers, onlookers, or allied loved ones are permitted in the space. However, you are very welcome to attend if you are questioning your queer identity or your survivor identity, or if you have not yet left the group.

IS THIS JUST FOR RELIGIOUS OR POLITICAL CULT SURVIVORS? OR, WHAT IF I WAS IN A ONE-ON-ONE CULT?

Participants so far have had a very wide range of cultic or high-demand group experiences. Regardless of the size of the group; the beliefs/content/scope of the group; whether you are a first-, second-, or multi-generational survivor; or any other factor that might make your situation unique: you are extremely welcome.

WHO RUNS GROUP?

The facilitators are Mitchyll Mora and Micah Damsky, the co-founders of Out of Line. Both are queer/trans cult survivors with significant experience in facilitation and community organizing. We are not professionals nor authorities; we are peer facilitators who benefit from the group space as much as anyone else does.

HOW ARE MEETINGS STRUCTURED?

The meeting is quite structured, using a facilitation script. Safeguards have been put in place including an explicit no-tolerance policy for bigotry and a rule against “crosstalk,” or direct comments on others’ personal shares.

We usually explore a reading on cult recovery for the first hour and then have open discussion for the second hour. At the end, we do a brief, completely optional, guided nervous system regulation aftercare session, including light breathing exercises and stretching.

WHAT’S UP WITH THE READINGS?

Readings are sent out to our email list-serv at least a few hours before the meetings and are also read aloud in the meeting space. We are very explicit that the readings are just a jumping-off point for conversation and that everyone is more than welcome to question, problematize, and/or dislike a reading. Here is a link where you can explore past readings.
